Blackburn 11 Wigan 15
Wigan overcame the handicap of two late withdrawals as they triumphed in the 1st round of the Lancashire Trophy at Blackburn.
Playing with a stiff breeze in their favour Wigan soon got on the board when skipper Andy Whittle thumped over a long range penalty in the 2nd minute. Further pressure followed courtesy of some good work in the set piece where Roy Caine and Lee Roby were making a return to competitive action after long absences.
Eventually this told as Caine went on the charge in the Blackburn 22 and from the ensuing ruck Steve Peacock slipped through a gap to touch down beneath the posts. Whittle added the conversion. Wigan had chances to extend their lead but failed to capitalise on the breaks made by elusive full back Danny Winrow and some strong running by 2nd row Alex Austin.
Despite the conditions Wigan went on the offensive early in the 2nd period and were rewarded when a blindside move saw wing Jon Blan chip through to the Blackburn line for Winrow to gather the ball and score.
Blackburn then set about trying to reduce the deficit and pulled back 6 points through a drop goal and penalty in the 3rd quarter. However their handling let them down in the face of some determined Wigan defence. As the game scrappily drew to a close Blackburn did claim an injury time consolation try from a questionable pass but it was too late to make a difference. |
Wigan 21 Kirkby Lonsdale 7
Wigan warmed up for next week’s Lancashire Trophy clash at Blackburn with a convincing 21-7 victory over Kirkby Lonsdale who have just been promoted to North West 1.
Dominant from the outset it was the quality of the Wigan back play which impressed with half backs Andy Whittle and Steve Peacock leading by example, the former opening the scoring when he stepped his way through to the posts to touchdown and give himself a simple conversion.
Next it was elusive centre Danny Winrow who scythed through to the line from 20 metres. The Wigan scoring was completed by 2nd row Lee Roby, returning after a long injury break, who took the ball close to the line and stretched over. Whittle added both conversions.
As the game entered its final stages Wigan fully deployed their bench to the detriment of continuity and this allowed Kirkby Lonsdale a late consolation try.
Other positives for Wigan on the day were the performances of hooker Matt Gregory and debutant centre Tom Mason.

IMPORTANT MEMBERS ' NOTICE |
As you all know, the Club has made great strides forward, both on and off the field, in recent years. However, we do not propose to sit back and rest on our laurels. In that respect, we are in the process of putting together another 5 year development plan, which will be published to members, once it has been finalised.
Of course, development such as that which has taken place at Douglas Valley does not just happen but requires considerable input from the members. In that respect, we have been very fortunate in the past few years to have been able to rely on the commitment, expertise and dedication of a number of people, for which we are grateful.
Further development, however, would be greatly assisted by some involvement from more members. This would ease the burden on those presently involved and would bring new ideas and fresh impetus to the table. Consequently, the purpose of this notice is to invite offers of help from others.
From the end of August, the positions of Treasurer and Chair of Fundraising, vacated by Derek Jones and Mark Ashley respectively after outstanding efforts, will become vacant. We are, therefore, looking to replace them. Consequently, we would invite anyone who is interested in either of these two posts, or in any separate aspects of the posts, to speak to one of our committee members, in order to explore things further. We say “separate aspects” because, whilst someone may not have the time to take on a full post, they may nevertheless be able to look after one aspect of it. For example, someone may well be happy to take responsibility for arranging match sponsors, whilst someone else might take responsibility for obtaining match ball or other sponsorship. In addition, our development plan will no doubt involve projects of other kinds, requiring varying degrees of commitment. Thus, would anyone who is interested in becoming involved in any way please get in touch with any member of the Executive Committee for a preliminary discussion.
