BRIAN LEIGH
It is with great sadness and a feeling of deep shock that the Club has to announce the sudden death on Monday, 28th September 2009 of Brian Leigh at the age of 78.
This great man of rugby has been a lifelong member of the Wigan Club and, because of his services and the esteem in which he was held, he was elected President of the Club in 1982 and served in that role with great distinction for a period of 12 years. He remains Wigan’s longest serving President and was made an Honorary Member of the Club on his retirement from the Presidency in 1994.
However, his massive contribution to rugby union does not end there. He was, of course, an outstanding and highly respected referee and is a Past President of The Manchester and District Referees’ Society. He was also made an Honorary Member of that Society and of the Liverpool and District Referees’ Society. In more recent years, he has also made a telling contribution to the assessment and performance of elite referees at both national and international level.
He is also a Past President of The Lancashire County Rugby Football Union and, at the time of his death, was still serving the County with great distinction and commitment as its Honorary Secretary. He will be irreplaceable and sorely missed. The Club’s deepest sympathy goes out to his three daughters, Anne, Helen and Janet and their respective families at this distressing time. |

| WIGAN RUFC GETS NEW WEBMASTER |
Wigan RUFC has a new webmaster: Greg Lynch has taken over from Standish Media Services Limited.
Any changes to the site will be gladly undertaken by Greg in future: as he gets used to the operating system he will be working principally from SMS's office in Standish. Please put Greg on your address book for matters relating to the website: gplynch@blueyonder.co.uk.
Would all members please also note that as a matter of administration, all messages concerning the website addressed to Greg should be copied to the Club Secretary David Wilkinson: davorlia@aol.com. Rugby matters should be communicated in the first instance to Rugby Chairman Alan James (ajrugby@hotmail.co.uk) who will pass on information to Greg. Unless these procedures have been followed messages will not be posted.
Many thanks for your co-operation, and good luck to Greg with the new job....just keep an eye open for Malc Holland's appalling jokes.....

Raise the Money, Run the Run |
I am currently undergoing treatment for Kidney Cancer at the Christie Hospital. I was diagnosed with grade four cancer on my right kidney in March this year, and I have since then had my kidney removed and I am currently receiving IL2 treatment (immunotherapy) to remove the cancer from my lung.
My Family and I would dearly love to give something back to The Christie for the successful treatment (so far), the professional and caring treatment of both myself and my family by all the team at The Christie.
To this end I want to build up a team of myself, family, friends, and volunteers from Wigan Rugby Club who wish to join me on the day to take part in next years Great North Run. All sponsorship money raised would go to the Christie Hospital.
Should you wish to join me on the day this is what you have to do......
2. I will then arrange for Christie Events to contact you to remind you to enter yourself in the Public Ballot for the Run.
3. Should you be unsuccessful in your Public Ballot entry Christie Events will find you a place within their allocated entries.
4. To participate using the Christies allocation you must guarantee at least £400 sponsorship (not a bad target for those sucessful in the Public Ballot)
5 For those not on E Mail send me your address along with name to me at 6 Harris Rd Standish WN6 0QR and I will keep you in the loop
In the New Year I will further contact all those who are joining me on the Run
In the meantime many thanks from myself and Christies for volunteering to “Run the Run, Raise the Money"
PS I thought I’d mention that I did the Run five years ago - aged 55 - after the Run the first six pints did not even touch the sides!!!
Footnote from Malc…..next years run is in October and each autumn, thousands of runners take part in the Great North Run in what is the biggest half-marathon in the world. The 21km (13.1 miles) course begins at Spital Tongues and follows a course through the centre of Newcastle, across the River Tyne and then ends at South Shields. Open to anyone aged over 17, the number of applications to run the race far exceeds the number of places available and a ballot system has been introduced to determine who participates.
I am sure anyone who does not have the fitness nor availability to take part will sponsor Mike for this worthwhile cause
