WIGAN 2ND XV 18 VALE OF LUNE 3RD XV 10
Saturday September 1st 2007

Chris Smith Reports..
WIGAN started the game with high hopes of victory after impressive close season training and the encouraging performances seen in the 2 friendly fixtures.
Although with many familiar faces there were some relative newcomers to the side with Rob Stopforth making his 2nd team debut at hooker and Aaron Marker and Killian Wallace looking to cement their places out wide for the coming season. Another change in the pack saw Lee Roby start at number 8.
The game started well for the Wigan side and the first 20 minutes saw much domination with pinpoint kicks from Steve Kelly holding the Lune side very much in their own 22. There were several chances created in the first 20 and with a more calculated approach from the Wigan side they could have been well into double figures before the game really got going. An element of panic seemed to appear in the Wigan game and with the Lune number 8 disrupting a lot of ball in the loose the game seemed to go stale with both sides cancelling each other out in midfield. After 35 minutes a penalty in front of the posts allowed Wigan to finally register some points as UNSWORTH easily converted to give Wigan a 3-0 lead at the break.
The 2nd half saw a change with Mortlock replacing Roby at the base of the scrum. The game started similar to how the first ended with both sides continuing to probe for the all important next score. Wigan, using the slope, started to impose themselves on the game and after 10 minutes of the half a break away from the forwards was stopped illegally on the visitors 22 and a quick tap penalty found its way to KELLY who crossed to put Wigan further ahead. The successful conversion created a 10 – 0 gap. Both sides then created chances but it was Lune who registered the next points. A couple of quick rucks put Wigan on the back foot and after a couple of short bursts Lune squeezed over for their first score of the day (converted). Wigan now started to look shaky and it took a penalty from Unsworth to settle the nerves, but with 10 minutes still to play a 6 point gap still didn’t look enough. Lune put Wigan under pressure from the kick off and looked the more likely to score, but the Wigan defence held firm until a penalty offence in front of the sticks. It was quite a surprise to see Lune opt to kick, but kick they did and the gap was shortened to 13 – 10. It was only in the last few minutes did Wigan start to find their fluency again and some effective pick and drives from Mortlock and Lowton helped push the Wigan side into dangerous territory. A quick break from Wigan stretched the defence of the visitors and a professional foul from their number 8 saw him finish the game on the sidelines. The resulting lineout saw some effective mauling from the pack and ANDY CLARKE spotted the gap to cross the line and finish the game, with Wigan winning 18-10.
A solid start for the pack who won their set pieces and caused the visitors some problems. The pace of Wallace and Marker are surely going to cause sides problems this year and the ‘now not so youthful’ Steve Kelly earning the MOM award.
Many thanks to the MOM sponsors ‘I have large ears’ PLC and next weeks game, sponsored by Does My Arse Look Big in These Shorts LTD could possibly see the award going to Dave Clarke.

ROSSENDALE 2ND XV 10 WIGAN 2ND XV 15
Saturday September 8th 2007
Report: Chris 'Bunter' Smith
Wigan 2's made the trip to Rossendale full of confidence after their opening
day victory against Vale of Lune. Changes meant starts for Chris and Jon
Blan and Peter Robertson. Mortlock returned to his more familiar position
in the front row after his short visit in the number 8 berth last week.
The game started well as both sides tried to play open rugby, with quick
play the balls from the rucks and some good hands across both back lines.
The game, as expected, became a midfield battle, with the first points
coming after 25 minutes with Rossendale taking the penalty points after
Wigan were caught offside. Wigan then started to push up field putting
pressure on the Rossendale line with some great drives from the pack.
Clearly the training tips from last week were put into the game as Wigan
secured virtually all of their ball in open play. The Rossendale stand off
was the man pinpointed to pressurise and as Kelly and Gallagher closed in he
threw a ball wide that was intercepted by TONKS who went half the field to
score (converted). Almost immediately after kick off the Wigan pack again
took the ball to Rossendale and another error in the 'Dale backline saw JON
BLAN clean up to again race away under the sticks. Rossendale found
themselves go quickly from 3-0 up to 12-3 down. The ball was now firmly in
Wigan's court as they looked likely to go further ahead and they did just
that with an Unsworth penalty shortly before the break. At 15-3 the
objective was to get to half time with the scoreline intact but some sloppy
defending and positive attacking from Rossendale saw the half finish with a
converted try from the Rossendale pack. Half time Rossendale 10 Wigan 15.
The second half saw the Rossendale side play a more attacking game as they
took the game to Wigan. The second half saw no more points for either side
as both defended really well. Wigan were put under a huge amount of pressure
as their defence stood firm. The back row combination of Robertson, Wilson
and Harraghy was fantastic as they disrupted a lot of Rossendale play. The
performance was a credit to the lads that travelled and coming away with a
win was a well fought result.
Mentions must go to Keith Power who is now using his level 1 coaching badge
to good effect as he actually identifies points for improvement as opposed
to the old fashioned method of 'just tw*t him'. Playing mentions to the back
row boys, Mortlock and Carter for standout performances.
The 'booze, booze, booze and fags and booze' sponsored Man of the Match
award is jointly won by the infamous hounds Wilson and Harraghy for their
oustanding performances.
PS - Pete Robertson would also have been awarded MOM status but he doesnt
drink enough or smurk tabs.
WIGAN 2ND XV 46 TYLDESLEY 2NDXV 6
Saturday September 15th 2007
Report: Chris Smith
The 2nd XV met Tyldesley at Douglas Valley hoping to carry on their good
start to the season. Changes from the Rossnedale game saw Wayne Bullough's  first start of the season, Andy Clarke at hooker and the return of Roby to the second row. Matt  Tonks started at stand off and Stuart Barker in the centres. The game started well for Wigan as they took the game to the visitors in the  pack with some effective set plays. Impressive picking and driving saw clean ball given to the backs who, with Tonks at 10, played out some creative  moves. Tyldsley found themselves on the back foot for most of the half with only 2 penalties to show for their limited possesion. First half tries came  from Matt Tonks, Tony Unsworth (2), Pat Gallagher and David Clarke to give Wigan a first half lead of 27 points to 6.
The start of the second half started more brightly for Tyldesley as their pack took more of a hold on the game. They put the Wigan back line under  some pressure but the defence held firm. It wasn't until 60 minutes that Wigan registered their first score of the half as credit must go to Tyldesley for their stubborn defence. The first to cross was Wayne Bullough, who forced himself over from a 5 yard scrum, followed by tries from Matt Tonks and David Clarke. The final score Wigan 46 Tyldsley 6 was a satisfying result for Wigan, who maintain their unbeaten start to the  season with noteworthy performances from Stu Barker, Wayne Bullough and Lee Roby. The MOM award, sponsored this week by 'Rent An ASBO', goes to Matt Tonks. A special  award, sponsored by 'Toysoutofthepram.co.uk', was awarded to Patrick Gallagher.
Wigan travel to Lymm next week hoping to continue their unbeaten start.
LYMM 3RD XV 13 WIGAN 2ND XV 19
Saturday September 22nd 2007
Report: Chris Smith

Wigan seconds travelled to Lymm on Saturday on the back of 3 impressive wins and with thoughts of justifying their position at top of the table. Changes saw Matt Gregory's pack debut in the back row, while Paul Bullough returned inthe centres.

The game, in the first 5 minutes, was to provide a clear indication of how the full 80 minutes was to go. Neither side displayed any fluent rugby and with too many forced passes there were too many handling errors. There seemed to be more scrums and lineouts in the first quarter of the game than in the previous 3 games of the season. Offside on their own 22 gave Lymm an easy penalty to take a 3 point lead after 25 minutes. After going behind Wigan seemed to sit up and take notice and put together their best move of the game on 30 minutes as a couple of quick rucks and positive handling sent David Clark in for the games first try (unconverted). Lymm kicked another penalty before the break to take a 6-5 lead at the break.
The second half started pretty much as the first with the sides containing each other in midfield. After 60 minutes Wigan forced a 5 metre scrum and Wayne Bullough collected the ball at number 8 and barged his way through the defence for a trademark try (converted). Wigan seemed to have their tails up and the introduction of Steve Kelly brought a fresh pair of legs into the back line. On 65 minutes a kick through from Kelly forced another 5 yard scrum where this time Kelly profited from his own good work and took a fine inside pass to go in under the sticks (converted).
The game looked like it was won, but Lymm had other ideas as they put together some positive driving rugby to themselves score a late try to provide some nervous closing moments of the game. Wigan managed to hold out as they came away from Cheshire with another 4 points to add to their tally. Performances of note came from the Bulloughs, David Clarke and the improving Tom Hampson.
Next week sees the visit of Marple to DV. They are the new boys to the league so are very much an unknown quantity. Wigan will have to raise their game to ensure their winning streak continues.
WIGAN 2ND XV 29 MARPLE 2ND XV 12
Saturday September 29th 2007
Report: Chris Smith
Wigan 2s welcomed the league newboys Marple to Douglas Valley on Saturday.
With the 2 sides never having met before Wigan had no previous form to study
so went into the game fully prepared for a hard game. Marple didn't
disappoint and provided the black and whites with a difficult game plan and
one which put the Wigan back line under sustained periods of pressure. The
visitors only had a bare 15 available after one of the travelling cars broke
down enroute. This was reduced to 14 men after only 15 minutes as one of the
Marple back row had to leave the field with a serious ankle injury.
The game started brightly for Wigan as they continued the fluent rugby seen
in recent weeks and they put the Marple back line under pressure as they won
clean ball from their set pieces and the backs seemed in unforgiving mood as
both Paul Bullough and Gareth Pierce came close to crossing the white wash.
The first half saw Wigan cross the visitors try line through Paul Bullough,
Aaron Marker, Wayne Bullough and Gareth Pierce. The try by Pierce
particularly stands out as the audacious dummy he threw was only matched by
Matt Dawson in the '97 tour of South Africa as he sent 3 Marple defenders the
wrong way to score Wigans 3rd try of the half.
At 22 points up the start of the second half had some resemblance of the
first as Wayne Bullough crossed (converted) to give Wigan a 27-0 advantage.
This score prompted Marple to play their best rugby of the game as they
played to their strengths with the pack turning the screw on their Wigan
counterparts.
They finished the game by getting the upper hand in the scrums
and played a good mauling game which Wigan struggled to match. They managed
to score two tries in the last 25 minutes of the game to give the scoreline
a more respectable view.
Marple must be given credit for their approach to the game that saw them play 65 minutes with a man less. They came to Wigan to play rugby and it was good to see two sides who wanted to both entertain and score points at the same time. The return game in February promises more
of the same.
A solid game for the 2's with noteworthy performances from Gareth Pierce and
Tom Hampson. A special mention to Chris Lowton who, for his 3 quid, managed
around 5 minutes, at a current rate of 60p/minute. more expensive than a
call to those dirty dirty phone lines (according to Dudsy. I've never called
them, honest!!). Ronnie was heard saying that its the first time he's met a
person who spends more money per minute than his missus!!

WARRINGTON 29 WIGAN 2ND XV 3
Saturday November 3rd 2007

Wigan travelled to local rivals Warrington, with hope of carrying on their impressive start to the season. Selection headaches saw several changes from recent weeks with Gallagher, Lloyd, Blan and Carter drafted into the first team. Due to the added unavailablity of Stuart Carter, Wigan had only the bare 15 to take to Walton Lea Road.
The game started well for Wigan as they put the Wire under early pressure and gained 2 quick penalties, one of which was converted by Paul Bullough. This was quickly cancelled out as Warrington kicked their own 3 points. The game was becoming a forward dominated affair as the well organised Warrington pack took the game to Wigan. The front 8 struggled in the scrum against the bigger pack and it was perhaps inevitable as the Wire mauled their way over for a try from a short lineout, expertly converted from the touchline. Half time - Warrington 10 Wigan 3.
Wigan started the first half with the firm belief that they could get back in the game but Warrington had other ideas. The Warrington back row started to dominate in the loose and the back line started to punch holes in the
Wigan defence. Both the Wire stand off and centre were kicking well and any periods of Wigan pressure were dealt with by effective defence kicks. Wigan conceded a further 3 tries in the second half as the Warrington pressure told. Final score - Warrington 29 Wigan 3.
A very disappointing game from the Wigan viewpoint and one which they never really threatened to win. A solid Warrington performance deservedly took the points and if they reproduce the display for the rest of the season they will undoubtedly be in the mix come the end of the season.
A surprise at the end of the game was that the Wigan players got a feed, which is one up on Waterloo from the week before when they were refused food as they weren't first team. Not a bad approach from a National Club!!
(Chris Smith)

WIGAN 2ND XV 29 MARPLE 2ND XV 14
Saturday November 17th 2007

Halbro Trophy

The Halbro Trophy saw Marple return to Douglas Valley to face Wigan 2s in
an almost identical repeat of the league game some 5 weeks earlier. The
Marple side had clearly been very active on the recruitment front as their
team was almost completely different from the side that contested the league
game.
The opening stages of the game saw Wigan take the game to Marple but their
well organised defence quickly snuffed out any imminent threats. The game
was turned on its head midway through the first half as Wigan seemed to push
the self destruct button as they won a scrum against the head some
hesitation saw the Marple centre drop on a loose ball for his easiest career
try. Almost immediately from kick off Marple gained another 5 metre scrum
and for the only time in the game pushed Wigan off the ball to win a penalty
try for a back row infringement. Wigan, now 14-0 down seemed to wake up and
realise they were in a game. Towards the end of the half the forward
pressure told as Wayne Bullough crashed over from the back of the scrum.
The second half was a complete contrast to the first as Wigan dominated in
all areas of the park. The pack realised their own fitness and aggression as
they took the game to their opposite numbers and disrupted line out and
scrums to essentially cut off the Marple supply to their back line. The next
score went to Eaves who expertly collected a flat pass from Carter to side
step his way, like twinkle toes, past the Marple defence to bring Wigan
level. Wigan were now threatening to score in every phase of play as Marple
struggled to break from their own half.
Paul Bullough was next to step up as
he shaped to charge at the line defence but instead stepped onto the outside
to draw the numbers and then place the ball over the Marple line. The final
nail in the coffin came from Stuart Carter who threw an outrageous dummy
from the base of a ruck to cheekily dive in unopposed. John Lloyd took on
the final kicking duty as he traditionally removed his boot and sweetly
converted from close to the touchline.
The cliche 'it's a game of 2 halves' was coined after somebody had watched a
very similar game to this. Marple came to DV to play rugby and provide an
even contest but found the 2nd half Wigan team just too strong. Overall, a
good game played in a good spirit, with another terrific win for the Wigan
2s. The Man of the Match award goes to John Lloyd, as decided by today's
sponsor 'IsupplyJohnwithhiscarinsuranceandhispremiumpaysformyholidaytotheMald
ives' Insurance Services, Wigan.

WIDNES 2ND XV 5 WIGAN 2ND XV 14
Saturday November 24th 2007

Wigan travelled to Heath Road hoping to win for the 1st time since the
inception of the Miller Homes Leagues. These games are never for the faint
hearted and this one didn't disappoint. Wigan started brightly and pushed
the Widnes line in the first 5 minutes. Widnes then took control of the game
as they played a very dominant forward game as they picked and drove their
way from half to half. Wigan conceded a try on the first Widnes foray into
their 22 and an even tougher day seemed to be on the horizon. The following
30 minutes became a midfield battle as both sides struggled to dominate. The
tackling was fierce and the game got a little more interesting as Wayne
Bullough scored (converted) to put Wigan in front.
The second half saw Wigan playing against the wind and up the slope. This
appeared to inspire the pack as they took the game to their opposite
numbers. The catch and drive from the lineout proved a decisive weapon in
the armoury as it enabled the Wigan side to bring the ball away from their
22 and into more safe territory. Both sides threatened scores and it was 15
minutes from the end when the Widnes Number 8 took a dislike to Phil Carter
and, after attacking Phil's hair, received a 10 minute rest for his
troubles. This spurred Wigan on as they looked to make the extra man pay.
The Widnes pack seemed in generous mood as their Number 6 then decided to
attack Stuart Carter and also received a well earned 10 minute break. The
resulting penalty saw Wayne Bullough receive the tap to crash his way over
for the decisive and winning try. The final whistle soon came as Wigan were
relieved to gain the points and remain the front runners in the league.
It was the Carter and Bullough brothers who inspired the side and another
good performance from John Lloyd saw the points come back to Wigan.
Quite a difficult decision for Man of the Match, but todays sponsors Wella
Hair Care and 'HasanyoneseenmydogitwaslastseensniffingaroundPhilCartersBarnet.co.uk' gave the award to Mr
Philip Carter.

WIGAN 2ND XV 31 FLEETWOOD 2ND XV 5
Saturday December 1st 2007
Report and Whinge: Chris Smith
The visit of Fleetwood to DV on Saturday saw teams at opposite ends clash in what promised to be an open game of rugby.
The game started with Wigan putting the Fleetwood back line under pressure but as the half progressed the game became a midfield battle. It was Wigan who looked the more likely to score and it was the returning Harraghy who provided effective support to score in the corner.
Five minutes later saw Paul Bullough recieve a tap penalty from Kelly to force his way past 3 Fleetwood defenders to score under the posts. A further score from the ever improving Wallace gave Wigan a comfortable 17-0 half time lead. Most of the second half was a dour affair as both sides contained each other in the middle third.
Two late scores from Wallace and Bullough gave Wigan a 31 point advantage until the last play of the game saw the Fleetwood scrum half race away for a consolation score. Although not a game for the rugby purist it saw both sides determined to make an impact and the aggressive tackling made for physical if not pretty game.
The Fleetwood pack provided Wigan with their toughest challenge to date and certainly had the upper hand in scrums for two thirds of the game. The Wigan run continues and the visit of Waterloo next week in the last 16 of the league trophy will bring another stern test.
WHINGE...
For those Waterloo players visiting next week you needn't worry....the Wigan hospitality will be at its usual high standard and you'll get the normal good feed expected at DV. We recognise there's not only the 1st team to look after!

OLDERSHAW 2ND XV 10 WIGAN 2ND XV 17
Saturday December 15th 2007

Report: Chris Smith
Wigan travelled to the Wirral with hopes of continuing their impressive run
thus far. The home form of Oldershaw was impressive with positive results
against other league sides. The game started with both sides looking for the
first score but with defences on top. Oldershaw had the slope and wind as
Wigan chose to play against the elements in the first half. This meant Wigan
were forced to play their way out of trouble as opposed to kick for
distance. Both sides threatened early on but the game didnt come to life
until the mid-point of the half as a kick through from Oldershaw caught the
Wigan defence napping as they stole in for the first score of the game. As
has been typical of Wigan it was only after they conceded did they come to
life. The end of the half was beckoning as Wigan stole an Oldershaw lineout
for Eion Harraghy to catch the defence out as he stole in for his second
score in 3 games. Half time 7 a piece.
Wigan now had the wind and slope behind them, although they fell 3 points
behind as a penalty was conceded in the opening minutes. Wigan's game then
began as they pinned the Oldershaw side in their own half for much of the
remainder of the game. Some pinpoint kicking from Bullough and Kelly ensured
the Oldershaw back 3 were kept busy. Wigan's forwards were taking the game
to the opposition as Lloyd and Eaves drove the pack forward. There were 2
potential tries chalked off as a resiliant defence kept Wigan at bay, but
after a number of mauls were pulled down the referee rightly awarded Wigan a
penalty try (converted). The pressure continued and a tremendous kick from
the touchline by Paul Bullough gave Wigan a 7 point lead. Wigan continued to
use the elements to close the game out and the points were won. Given the
condition of the ground and the elements both sides played some good rugby
and the Oldershaw back row must get a mention for their dogged effort in
spoiling Wigan ball.
Mentions must go to Mike Carter, Wayne Bullough and Stuart Carter for their
consistent performances. We now go into Christmas sitting on top of the pile
and look to continue the good run in the New Year. A great end to 2007, who
knows what 2008 brings.

Saturday March 22nd 2008

Wigan travelled to Sandbach to face the side who knocked them off top spot
while Wigan were on cup duty last weekend. The start of the game was delayed
as the travelling side were severely delayed due an accident on the M6.
Wigan started the game with the aim of taking the game to Sandbach and a
number of drives from the pack carved out a couple of half chances which
were spurned. As the game progressed both sides defended well and chances
were kept to a minimum. Any pressure Wigan managed was effectively snubbed
out by some very good clearance kicking from the Sandbach stand off, who
used the tail wind to his sides advantage. It was from a lineout that
Sandbach scored their first points as they cleverly drove forward to score
out wide (unconverted). This score gave Sandbach the momentum as they
pressured the Wigan defensive line and after a short period of scrappy play
the Sandbach number 8 squirmed his way over for his sides 2nd score
(converted). This could have signalled a Wigan collapse but wise words from
coach Power ensured Wigan finished the half on a high. The forwards were
dominating the scrums and used this to their advantage as they drove the
Sandbach pack off most of the set pieces, allowing Bullough to take the side
forward. It was Bullough (W) who got Wigan's first points of the game as he
took a short pass from Kelly to carry 3 defenders over the line for the
visitors first try (unconverted). Half time Sandbach 12 Wigan 5
The 2nd half gave Wigan the wind advantage although they preffered to keep
the ball in the pack to give the side some go forward. Most of the half
belonged to the Wigan side as they used both the wind and their superiority
in the scrums to put Sandbach under pressure. Wigan's 2nd try came from
Steve Kelly who threw a neat dummy to split the centres and go over in the
corner, converted by Paul Bullough. Sandbach then came back into the game
and retook the lead with a penalty. With 15 minutes to go a scrum on the
Sandbach 22 saw the Wigan pack take control of play and an 8 man maul, well
controlled by Carter saw Simm squeeze over for what proved to be the winning
score (converted by Paul Bullough). The last 10 mins saw Wigan soak up
Sandbach pressure and some stiff tackling from Pierce, Unsworth and Simm
kept the threat at bay and the final whistle saw the Wigan side regain top
spot (with a game in hand). Make no mistake this was a great result for
Wigan against a Sandbach side unbeaten for many weeks and who pose the
greatest threat to Wigan's claim on top spot. It is now back in Wigan's
hands as they must continue their impressive run and look to capitalise on
their next 3 games, all at Douglas Valley.
