Wigan 4th XV 62 Tyldesley 4thXV 0
Saturday September 1st 2007
Match Pictures by Mary Burley |
WIGAN's Veterans turned in a masterclass of running rugby against a new Tyldesley side embarking on its first foray into league rugby.
The visitors included a number of young players making their senior debuts, and all acquitted themselves well despite the one-sided nature of the scoreline.
The game was dominated by the skill and pace of Chris 'The Master' Joynt at full back, a huge capture for the Wigan club who is settling into the new disciplines of rugby union with a vengeance. Chris scored two great tries and created four more with his intelligent running, accurate offloads in the tackle, and breadth of vision, as well as great positional kicking, that showed without doubt why he is one of the highest rated rugby league players of his generation.
He was supported on all sides by a fast, confident back line that on occasions left the opposition breathless in its wake: 'Wild' Wayne Mawdesley, making a welcome return to the side on the wing, scored a brace out wide, as did impressive debutant centre Marc 'Twinkle Toes' Simon. On the other wing Andy McMurray opened the scoring for Wigan, and there was another impressive debut for centre and Man Of The Match Roger 'Joe Cool' Cooper, whose tireless work in attack and defence throughout the afternoon deservedly earned him the accolade. Another welcome returnee was the ice cool form of Tommy 'Hernia' Shaw who showed that in truth it never leaves you.....
At half back the calming influence of Malc 'T&P' Holland and skipper Sean 'The Burner' McHugh provided the essential link between a rock and a soft place.
In the forwards the scrummage was especially tight against a tough and uncompromising Tyldesley eight who gave everything in the close exchanges of the game. No 8 Scott 'The Beast' Buckley was in devasting form in the loose, scoring two cracking tries and mopping up the opposition all around the park. Chris 'Cornflake' Caw and Ian 'Arsy' Morgan played particularly well in the second row, and Alan 'Dingy' Doran and Steve 'Aw Come On Ref' Morters proved too much at flanker for the opposition breakaway.
The front row, tireless workers for the cause, won a steady supply of both their own and the opposition's ball, Dave 'Crooner' McDonagh and Vice Captain Paul 'Quarterpounder' Cattle staying the course supported by interchange props Mark 'Puffing Billy' Ashley and Dave 'The Cat' Burley.
Suprise of the afternoon was the awesome contribution of 3rd team skipper Mike Robinson who weighed in in the second half with two conversions and a great supporting try of his own. Add the inimitable chemistry of John 'The Stalwart' Ashton and Steve "Battering Ram' Mercer coming on to the field to provide yet more depth to the side, and the fact that the side was missing Keith 'Advocate' Lowe, Glen 'Camper' Jones, Steve 'Bulldozer' Woods, Phil 'Sidestep' Mather and Steve 'Action Man' Thomas, and Tim 'Forearm Smash' Sharkey and the prospects for the season look good....

Mawdesley opens his account: The Cat displays his impressive physique on the touchline...

Doran and Cattle go ball hunting: Holland waits for some service.

Rugby is a game for men who like hugging....

Presumably Wigan are going to get this one.....

What a pack......

The Master breaks out: MOM Roger Cooper is right, and two try debutant

Report: Paul Cattle
WIGAN's Veterans carried on with their winning ways away to local rivals Aspull seconds.
Wigan welcomed back Jason Brown at prop, Glen Jones and Keith Lowe in the back row and Tim Sharkey in the centres.
Making their debuts today were Bradford Sean and Dave ‘The Groin’ Lyon, although Dave’s debut will go down on record as the shortest in the Vets history, lasting all of 10 minutes. Missing this week were Tommy ‘the tooth’ Shaw, who had a previously arranged dental appointment, Steve ‘Riggers’ Morters who was away filming the latest Adams Family movie and Mark ‘Rashers’ Ashley, who had his usual bout of travel sickness.
Aspull took an early lead to rock Wigan and lead 7-0, but the Vets soon struck back with a penalty from McHugh, before Lowe and then Murray scored to make the half time score 15 – 7 to Wigan.
Wigan started the second half strongly adding tries from Cooper and Boardman to take the score to 32 – 7 before Aspull, who never gave up, came back strongly at the end to score 2 tries to make the final score a more respectable 32 – 19 to Wigan.
Wigan dominated for much of the match but gave away too much of their own ball in open play, although they looked good in the set pieces, and the backs looked dangerous every time they got the ball.
The two teams meet again on the 13th October in the Halbro Plate at Douglas Valley.
Next up for the Vets is a home game against Kirby Lonsdale thirds at home, who are fresh from defeating Carnforth seconds by 39 - 12.

Report by 'Sniffer'
After a fantastic warm up from ex GB assistant coach Dave Lion Wigan were caught cold by a youthful K L 1/2/3rd team. Honest, ask Scott. The Vets lost Joynty on the first play of the game with a serious ankle injury,a missed tackle from Cooper pressing him in to the game before he had time to sober up.This seemed to drag the spirit out of the Wigan team and KL took full advantage to race into 19-0 lead.Wigan were now looking down the barrel of their first defeat of the season.
Inspired by their influential captain McHugh and the fact that Wild Wayne had to go to Tinsley at half time Wigan began to turn things round. The introduction of 'uncle festa' Morters and Tommy the Tooth Shaw, along with Sean Melling at full back, spurred Wigan on and the tide was about to change. Some really good running by Scott Buckley meant he did not have to pass the ball to anyone else and resulted in two well taken tries. By half time Wigan had control of the game but still had to graft really hard in the second half to get the job done. Malc Holland got his usual lengh of the field try and then Canadian international Mark Simon actually caught the ball, he was not sure what to do at this point but was guided to the line by his helpful team mates.
Sean Melling was now breaking the line at will and got two tries of his own off great service from Cooper. All the forwards played really well, especially Jones who got the sponsors m-o-m and was presented with a new toilet seat by Proserve Director Ian Kent after the game....

Match report by 'Sniffer'
Wigan travelled the short distance to Bolton without influential scrum half Holland, who was apparently seen in Paris scrubbing graffiti off walls whilst texting Wayne to console him on being single again. Despite most of the squad being concerned about Wayne’s loss, Wigan got off to a great start with some well taken tries from the backs.
Within twenty minutes the game, as a contest, was over.Simon scored a special length of the field try but then had to be brought off with exhaustion. He was so badly affected that when he came back on to the field he played the last ten minutes for Bolton. Wigan got to the break well clear on the scoreboard.
To start the second half coach Hooch made some tactical changes, moving 'uncle festa' up to hooker, Mercer to second row, Brown to prop. He altered the back line to enable Cooper and Boardman the rest they needed to be the first two Vets home in Sunday's Marathon at Haigh Hall, closely followed by McHugh who had to carry Festa and Big Jimmy round with him.
The introduction of Gleeson enabled Bolton to get points on the board; a superbly weighted interception pass to Bolton’s fastest player saw him go all the way to the line, earning Glees one of the day’s trophies.
The other trophy, the coveted M-O-M award, went to a young C. Lion who scored three tries on its first appearance for the Vets. Special mention must go to J.Ashton at scrum half, the returning R. Wilky at flanker, and not forgetting A. Lewis on his return from his corrective surgery and tummy tuck.

Match report by "Sniffer"
Wigan stay on top of the table with a convincing win over Chorley.
The game was played in good spirit and was well refereed, after the official cleared up his problem of not being able to distinguish which team was which, he made Wigan change from black to white much to the disgust of centres Lewis and Sharkey who thought they looked slimmer in black, Lewis was also concerned his black rinse might run onto his shirt.
Wigan started the game really well considering coach Hoochie's assistant David Lyon could not do a warm up, as he was doing a small fun run up in Newcastle. His offspring, C Lion, scored four very well taken tries but couldn't stay after the game to celebrate as he had to take advantage of his parents' absence.
Most of Wigan's tries came from the backs, with only Buckley and Bradford of the forwards scoring. Other try scorers were Wild, Lewis 3, Melling, and Wallace, at which point, loud applause was heard from the bushes behind the posts.
M-O-M went to Wilky for an outstanding display at flanker and D-O-D was awarded to Dr Holland who spent most of the day treating the opposition, despite not having even a first aid badge to his name.
Wigan partied into the night to celebrate Doc's birthday but will have to sober up for the challenge of Fylde this Saturday.

Match report by 'Sniffer'
Wigan won this top of the table clash against a very good Fylde team with a superb backs to the wall performance played in great spirit by both teams. In an excellent game with no quarter asked nor given, Wigan played some fine rugby which the travelling support would have appreciated, had they not spent so much time in the beautiful Fylde clubhouse.
There were too many good performers on the day to single out individuals, but mention must go to the referee who handled the game very well considering its intensity. Wigan seem to be growing in confidence through the season and, with coaches Hooch and Lyon working wonders on Thursdays, I don't think it will be too long before Buckley passes a ball to a man, McHugh gets tackled, and Uncle Festa goes a full game without falling out with all his team mates.
The m-o-m went to Glen Jones for an all-action display that gained him a Bang and Olufsen key ring and the D-O-D went to Uncle Festa for the poorest attempt at a catch ever seen in Vets rugby. Wigan took full advantage of Fylde's superb hospitality and partied long into the night, eventually dragging Joynt and Lyon away from the free ale at about eight o'clock.... Scorers for Wigan: tries by Ian Morgan, Phil Mather, Scott Buckley and Rob Wilkinson, two conversions by Sean McHugh

Report by 'Sniffer'
Wigan progressed through to the next round of the cup with a convincing win over Preston Grasscutters. A few players were absent, for various reasons, so coach Hooch re- shuffled the back division ; Ashton coming in at nine and Wilky moving to outside half. Uncle Festa started the game at flanker to make more use of his pace.
Wigan started the game really well and were soon in control, the absence of Holland being evident in the speed the ball was being moved about. The highlight of the game was undoubtedly the long distance try from young Dave 'The Cat' Burley, playing his first ever game at prop. After side stepping both Preston flankers he decided to outpace the backs and set off on a solo run to the line, finishing with a fine dive under the posts.
The Standish Media Services M-O-M went to Morters who was rewarded with the prize of a night out with Rashers and D-O-D went to Lewis who gets a night out with Rashers, Wayne and Boardy.

Wigan welcomed Colne & Nelson to DV on a beautiful autumn day; perfect for a great day out for all the family. The Vets did not disappoint and turned in a near faultless display in front of a large crowd who, at the time, did not realise that it would be the only decent rugby union they would see that day.
The knowledgeable spectators were left to wonder why Sharkie was not in Paris, along with Festa, Jones, Lion and all the other guys who can catch and pass. (sorry Scott, keep practising). Wigan showed their strength in depth after losing quite a few players for various reasons; especially in the backs, senior players McMurray and Melling did a good job leading the youth of a young C. Lion, Jamie and Wain.
The forwards were led by captain for the day McDoughnut who is leaving Wigan to live down South, and there were also good displays from Cattle, Mercer, Ramsdale and Caw. This created a platform for speedy half-backs Holland and Sharkey to create havoc in the Colne ranks, with the outside half scoring four tries, not realising at the time it would cost him a jug. If only he had had the guidance of Coach Lyon, who turned young lion back inside with no one to beat. He promptly gave the ball to someone else to score...
The M-O-M went to Sharkie for a great four-try display and the D-O-D went to Glen Jones for obvious reasons.

Paul Cattle reports
Preston Grasscutters were the visitors to D.V on a beautiful autumn day made for fast open rugby. Wigan went into the game unbeaten, but got a real shock from the start when the Preston winger outfoxed the dithering Wain to score in the corner.
Wigan would recover from this, but not Wayne, who was last seen in a Pemberton Karaoke bar, cursing Malc to his most recent sweetheart. After the bad start Wigan found a bit of form and started to throw the ball about with gay abandon, which resulted in a fine touchdown in the corner for winger Jamie Redknapp.
Preston were now struggling to contain the Wigan attack with Big Scott, back from a slight cold, breaking at will, setting up good field position for the backs to use there pace. The front row were now getting the better of their opponents and creating some great turnover ball for Holland to waste.
Sharkey scored his usual hat trick of tries but unfortunately Mary had not given him enough money for a jug, and she has decided he can't play next week because he needs to learn to score only twice.
M-O-M went to the young C Lion for a superb display of open running, reminiscent of his father, when he could actually run and D-O-D went to Rashers for turning up at 12.00 in his kit then realising at 2.28 that he had forgotten his boots.

Carnforth 2nd XV 12 Wigan 4th XV 34
Saturday November 10th 2007
Pictures by Mary Burley |
The 4ths travelled up the M6, and came away with a great win against a very physical and determined Carnforth team. The score line of 34-12 did not do Carnforth justice as they were a lot worse than that...(I knew you would read it John).
Joking apart this was a great game that could have gone either way right down to the wire. Wigan started the game quite poorly but a great break by the C. Lion saw them score a try against the run of play. Carnforth were next to score when the no 8 picked up from the scrum and ran unopposed to the line. Obviously a spy had told him that Lewis was under the weather with the same cold that Buckley cried off with last week.
This seemed to shock Wigan into action, with young Lyon making good breaks from some quality balls off Cooper it was looking like an advertisement for Gingers for justice. The try of the game was a great individual effort from Captain Mc Hugh who picked up a loose ball inside his own half and after some great footwork, outpaced the Carnforth defence to score under the posts.
Wigan played the second half down hill, with the wind at there backs and should have capitalised on this but with Holland's passing slower than his usual snail's pace they never seemed to get the momentum they needed. The introduction of Boardman to the second row seemed to inspire Wigan who went on to close the game out with a great try from Jamie Redburn.
The 4ths will now look forward to the return game, when Carnforth will come down en masse and do what they do best . The M-O-M was awarded to Craig Lyon again (does his dad pick it?) and the D-O-D went to Dave Lion for messing up the arrangements for his jolly boys outing.

Wigan 4th XV 27 Trafford MV 3rd XV 7
Saturday November 10th 2007
Pictures by Mary Burley |
'SNIFFER' writes...The Vets welcomed Trafford Metrovick for the first time in many years to Douglas Valley With the absence of Riggers and captain Sean, away on an anger management course in Egypt, the question on everybody's lips in the changing rooms was would the team be able to cope without Riggers....
Coach Hooch tried to rally his troops beforehand but the excesses of a week away with the 'Hindley Lonely Hearts Club' in Kent ('I never spent a penny') were obviously taking their toll. The game started in farcical circumstances when within five minutes the quietly spoken Irish referee Paul ('I own the Glenview Gust House in Blackpool, glenviewblackpool.com, all welcome') Kervick made, what he later described as an incorrect decision, when in a strange case of mistaken identity he sin-binned Scott Buckley instead of Mark Simon! Early excessive use of the whistle by Paul also confused the grazing sheep in the nearby field which quickly formed into regimental pairs and marched in concentric circles towards their pen under the impression that the whistling was their shepherd calling. Paul later made up for this by stamping his influence on the game throughout, earning respect from players and spectators alike; well done Sir.
Paul was ably assisted by the Trafford Mertrovick scrum half who had also decided that he was infact the best referee on the field, and spent the entire game upsetting players on both sides and at the end was about as welcome with the spectators as Gary Glitter at a children's Christmas Party. His youthful back division never getting the service to demonstrate the talent they obviously had. In an amazing coup the right wing back partnership of the 'Puberty Pair', Jamie Oliver and Lenny Lyon, after spending the entire fist half playing 'scissors, paper stones', were snapped up by an undercover film producer on the touchline who commented their physiques had all the attributes for them to appear as extras in his next movie - Schindlers List 2!
The Vets front row of Jason 'I used to be a winger' Brown, Steve 'too fat to appear in an LS Lowry painting' Woods and Paul 'I'm having a surrogate baby' Cattle, used their experience to dominate the set plays to provide the ever lively (or is that barely alive?) scum half Holland sufficient ball to make his ageing fly half Timmy 'Cliff Flemings lovechild' Sharkey sufficient ball to launch his darting backs on countless raids into enemy territory. Timmy later commenting 'Me and Malc are a future Celebrity Come Dancing partnership if ever there was one, but I'll have to wear the dress 'cos our Mary wears the pants in our house!'
Tommy's son, Roger Cooper, scorched over for a couple of well taken tries and being a quick learner off loaded to an even more follicly challenged Sean Melling with the line again at his mercy. Former 'Right Said Fred' band leader Roger later commenting "with all the money you pay out playing for this team I can't afford a jug" Fuming coach Hoochy immediately enforced a £10 fine, issued Roger a new direct debit form and as a further punishment sent him straight home with a DVD of Haircut 100s greatest hits!
Sean's father, Duggie Melling on seeing his son scoot over from two yards out was heard to exclaim "I could have scored that!" At which he was escorted straight back to St. George's nursing home where he was put straight to bed with a strong sedative and a cup of cocoa. Wild Wayne's new blonde girlfriend, Waynetta (An older version of Mary Burley) was left somewhat bemused when, after spending the first half as a sub on the touchline strutting up and down like an overstuffed turkey with bird flu, Wayne had mysteriously disappeared when called upon by Hoochy to enter the fray. Could this breach of discipline signal the end of a troubled career? Fingers crossed! Wayne later explained his transgression on suffering a very severe asthma attack the night before whilst on a night out in Wigan town centre; apparently 2 asthmatics attacked him! It's his own fault..he should have heard them coming! The strikingly similar Wayne and Waynetta had unfortunately to leave early for further Christmas pantomime practice at Wigan Little Theatre, but not before picking Cinderella up on the way!
The second row jumpers of Chris 'I need a step stool' Caw and Ian Morgan, (the only bloke we know who suffers from vertigo when lifted) tried manfully in the lineout despite the erratic throwing of hooker Cattle whose aim was that bad on the day - if he'd have done a parachute jump he'd have missed the earth!
Forward sub Rashers remained unused deciding not be risked whilst still recuperating after a recent return from a few days away in a back street Bruges hospital where he allegedly had corrective lazy surgery, pace implants and a belly tuck!
Apart from that it was the usual Vets farce, Sharkey trying to talk sense, Hoochy demanding more, Wrighty making a fortune on the touchline selling Dingy alibis at £10 a time, Malc wondering were all the beer tokens have gone, Boardy wanting a ball with handles, Mark Simon questioning his wisdom in ever joining the team, Jamie Oliver wearing his underpants in the bath (has he something to hide?), Little Steve threatening a comeback as he needs a bath, and the new Mrs Jones on the touchline questioning her choice of Glen amongst far more better looking blokes in the Vets front row! Meanwhile Lewis, Lowey, and Scott covered the grass slower than bluetongue grazing cattle leaving Glen somewhat breathless as the excesses of the honeymoon cruise finally took its toll, later commenting "All these years and I thought the Karma Sutra was something served with rice!"
Every credit to Traf Mets whose commitment, drive and will to win continued to the end - a credit to any club. Malc sportingly rejected his MOM award to encourage his younger brethren but accepted the sponsor's gift from Optimum owner Peter 'my shirts shrink' Moran of a festive Platt Bridge advent calendar it's like a normal calendar but all the windows are boarded up!
Rossendale away next week - thermals needed - let's just hope they give us a barrel by mistake like last year then it's off to Glens wedding reception at Ashfield House (but don't forget if Wayne asks it's at the Beeches!) Selection problems for coach Hoochy as the abundance of talent means that game sharing and rotation will become a necessity for one and all - even Wayne.. if he returns....
Meanwhile rumours from the Egyptian desert abound that Riggers has bartered Sean away for 2 camels but the deal went sour when Joynty demanded his usual 10% fee! Nothing new there then! Apparently early excitement of an ancient archaeological discovery by the lads were quickly dispelled when the mummified remains found by them proved to be nothing more sinister than Jack Robey asleep on his sun lounger!
(Webmaster's note: this is the longest report ever to appear on the Wigan site. Thanks Sniffer...) |

Wigan 4th XV 48 Thornton Cleveleys 2nd XV 3
Saturday December 1st 2007
Pictures by Mary Burley |
'SNIFFER' WRITES...
Wigan welcomed Thornton Cleveleys to D V on a cold but bright November day. Expecting a great battle after claims on the T C web site, the Wigan players were surprised at the ease of which they achieved this victory.
The first twenty minutes were dominated by the referee, who with a penalty count of 15-0 against Wigan, was beginning to confuse the Vets players. Wigan decided the best policy was to keep the ball in hand, which they did to great affect, with three tries in quick succession. The pick of these a forty yard special from Captain McHugh, who showed a great turn of pace to outrun the youthful defence. Wigan got to the break well in front and Coach Hooch decided to give some of the young lads a run: Doran Boardman and Mather came on in the backs, to add some speed out wide and Martin Jump (real name) came on at scrum half to challenge Holland as the worst passer of a ball in vets history.
Lady Bowes Lyon asked coach Hooch if he could come off early because he was missing his girlfriend, but will find it difficult to regain his place after Boardman's outstanding performance. The Vets kept up the pace in the second half and scored some more great tries. One of the highlights was a length of the field effort started with a beautiful pass from second row Mercer and finished with aplomb by young Boardy, after going through numerous pairs of hands.
Wigan were now enjoying their rugby and benefiting from the hours of skills work done in the summer with the coaching staff. ,who must take some credit for the way the team is playing. M-O-M went to Alice Cooper for a great display at centre, and the Sanderson Watts sponsored D-O-D went to Cattle for attempting to talk some sense into Riggers. (Can't put nowt where there is nowt....)

Report: Sniffer
The Vets travelled over to Clitheroe on a bitterly cold day, to try and progress to the quarter finals of the cup.
Most of the Vets squad were in attendance and volunteers were needed to cut the numbers down to 20. Noticeable absentees were two of the coaching staff, apparently on freebies for Christmas. (One was spotted in Ramsey's restaurant and the other in Rab C's chippy).Wigan struggled to get their hands on the ball for the first twenty minutes, giving away too many penalties, but the defence held firm. When Wigan eventually got the ball they played some great rugby and were well in front by half time, despite losing Sean Melling, shot by the sniper who is following him round.
The Vets brought on Martin Jump to have a knocking on competition with Redkid and gave some well deserved game time to Mercer and Bratfort Sean.
Clitheroe were not going to make it easy for Wigan and with the score delicately balanced at 57-0 with ten minutes to go, they kicked a very fine penalty goal to send the fans home with tales to tell the grandchildren.
Wigan lost their way after this and conceded two tries, one of these being allowed to stand despite Mc Hugh claiming he had ticked the bloke twice. The young C Lion scored another three tries, and made it known that Daddy would buy the three jugs he owes at the Vets Christmas party. M-O-M went to Buckley for his fine distribution skills (see coaching staff please) and D-O-D was won by Mc Hugh for asking the ref to blow for offside when intercepting a pass on his own line.
The special U-I-S award went to Festa for falling asleep stood up in a Pogues concert later that evening despite, coach Lyon observing, that he had not done anything to cause such fatigue....

Ormskirk 4th XV 0 Wigan 4th XV 10
Saturday December 22nd 2007 |
Wigan went on the road again for a re-arranged fixture against Ormskirk. This being the day after Mad Friday there were quite a few cry offs, notably Chris Caw with a cold nearly as bad as Scott’s, earlier in the year.
Since many of the Wigan committee were present the Vets were determined to put on a show but the aspirations of Morters and Cooper et al were thwarted by an over zealous referee. Wigan tried to open the game up but were penalized at every opportunity by the Ormskirk committee member. The Vets eventually won this contest 10-0, but apart from Wigan’s five tries (three disallowed) the game was boring.
M-O-M went to the spectator who noted that it would never replace rugby, and D-O-D went to everybody else who chose to waste their valuable time.
The Wigan team decided to do what they do best, and went mob handed to the children’s carol concert at the club. The party gets better every year and special thanks must go to Malc Holland Promotions and all their staff for the hard work they put in year after year....

Clitheroe 2nd XV 10 Wigan 87
Saturday January 12th 2008 |
Report: Sniffer
The Vets travelled to Clitheroe at nearly full strength with Cattle, Rammy, Lion, Cat and a young C Lion in their team; they were only missing Sid Walrus for that extra bit of dog. Wigan began the game very strongly, and debutant old Lion scored a great try out wide.
This set the pattern for the day and the Vets scored some fantastic tries, notably Brat fort's excellent length of the field effort. The first half of the game was near faultless from Wigan, so much so that coach Hooch had to bring on Holland to restore some normality. After the break Hoochy gave a run to two more of the young lads, Ramsdale and Mather, who both gave sterling performances to prove the future is in good hands.
Lewis was back after his latest corrective surgery and there was also a good exhibition on the wing from David Bailey. Wigan seemed to lack concentration towards the end of the game and allowed Clitheroe to score a try, but then kicked back into gear and finished with good tries from Buckley and Uncle Festa, who celebrated by pretending to have a shave ?. M-O-M was awarded to all the non players who travelled up to show their support, and D-O-D went to Young Lion who did not know whether Clitheroe was North or South on the M6 despite playing there three weeks ago. |

Stockport 4th XV 8 Wigan 22
Halbro Plate Quarter Final ..Saturday January 26th 2008 |
Report by 'Sniffer'
"Bring 'em on" was the message on the Stockport web site. So we came, we saw, we conquered. Wigan Vets won a great game against a very determined Stockport 15 who obviously fancied theire chances of an upset.
From the kick off it was apparent the two teams had very different tactics, the Vets were willing to throw the ball about to find gaps whilst the home team seemed content with keeping the ball in the forwards. Wigan struggled to make inroads early on but eventually good work from the backs enabled Scottish international Andy Mc Flurry enough space to squeeze in at the corner.
The Vets forwards were more than holding there own against much younger opponents and were starting to win more and more ball for the backs to squander. When the teams returned from oranges the Wigan backline seemed to have more zest than earlier in the game and were creating more and more chances.
The introduction of Bratfort and Paul Simon added some weight to the Wigan pack and from this stage there was only going to be one winner. Two tries from Lady Bowes Lion and one from Wigan’s answer to Brendan Hill finished the game off.
Stockport never gave in and scored a consolation try from a scrum pushover late in the game. M-O-M was won by Lewis, largely due to the fact that he went home at 6.30 the night before. D-O-D was awarded to the other six who did the full day, including pub watch Cooper who can not drink in Orrell again.

Commentary by 'Sniffer' - Wigan's season goes from strength to strength on the crest of a a wave of stunning attacking rugby that is a delight to witness. Clitheroe quite rightly put out a stronger side than that faced by the 4ths in the two previous games of the season, but there was no answer to the pace, power and remarkable ball handling skills of the Wigan side.
With the pivot of all attacking moves being the Captain, Shaun McHugh, (who is also very effective with the boot) and the tireless work of forwards and backs, this was champagne rugby at its best.
This side has strength in every position and strength coming off the bench - two second half subs, Andy 'Mc' Murray and Sean 'Bratfud' Brannan scored searing individual tries to put the match well out of the game visitors' reach, and this is undoubtedly the best 'Veteran' side put out by Wigan in the last few years.
Picking an individual out in such an accomplished team effort is difficult, but centre Tim Sharkey played a blinder - dazzling running, aggressive tackling and superb offloads added up to a perfect game for Tim, a real asset to the Wigan club this season. His centre partner Roger Cooper also goes from strength to strength, as do the two young flyers Jamie Redfearn and Chris Lyon.
At times the running and passing was breathtaking, especially when Wigan elected to
run at the opposition from defensive positions deep in their own half, a move that led to several scores as the visitors were caught out of position. As usual, Scott Buckley terrorised the visitors' defence, with towering performances alongside from Keith Lowe and Steve Morters, Malc Holland and Martin Jump bossed the breakdown and the set pieces for Wigan, and lock Chris Caw totally dominated the lineout.
The forwards and backs did their collective business, and it is difficult to see who in this league can beat this side - and indeed they will give good account of themselves in the cup competition as well. Thanks lads for a magnificent performance and a really entertaining game, and credit to Clitheroe as well who despite being run off their feet in the second half never let their heads go down and were a credit to their club.
How the opposition saw it (from the Clitheroe website):
'The 2nd XV were the only Senior team to play last Saturday and they came off second best to an extremely strong Wigan team. Despite travelling with a strong side, the Cavaliers were overwhelmed by the creativity of a Wigan team boasting a plethora of wise old heads. That said Clitheroe kept on playing to the final whistle and took their part in an entertaining game.’

Kirkby Londsdale 3rd XV 7 Wigan 4th XV 29
Saturday March 8th 2008 |
'Sniffer' reports: Wigan travelled up the M6 on a blustery, windy, rainy, cold day to attempt to play a game of rugby on a pitch that resembled one of Lewis’s building plots. Things got worse when coach Hooch decided it was too cold to risk captain McHugh and put Jump in at out half. On top of this the Ref failed to turn up and a volunteer was found in the clubhouse, Despite the fact he was a Kirkby player he was one of the best Refs the Vets have had all year, and a lot easier to understand than Derek. Wigan tried to play their usual brand of fast open rugby but were constantly thwarted by the conditions. Coach Hooch had a masterplan, and introduced Wallace to the fray; this in turn slowed everything down. The sheer presence of the great man made everybody realise that you don’t have to be fast, agile or skilful to play this game. Some great kicks from Wallace got good field position for the young backs to close the game out. The Vets were pleased to come out on top and credit must go to Kirkby for pushing them all the way. Next up for Wigan is the cup semi with Rossendale at DV on Paddies day. There is free entry to the ground and a free pint on production of this match report. Not. |

"Sniffer" writes: Wigan made their way up the M65 in four cars due to the lack of available players to fill any more. The Vets had to dig deep and grind out a great win against a very aggressive Colne 1st/2nd team. Coach for the day McHugh produced a master stroke moving young prop Sydney Wallace to full back to keep him away from play. Colne seemed aware of this tactic though and ran young Wallace around with some great kicks.
Wigan were playing some brilliant rugby and would have got more tries if only Lowey and big Bratfurt could have seen the dead ball markings when over the line. Colne kept themselves in the game with a couple of breakaway tries, and a great effort from the winger who failed to stop when Larry Wallace Grayson tuck him shouting “shut that door”. All the Vets deserve great credit for this performance, grinding out a win in such difficult circumstances, and also in proving a lot of people wrong. Special mention must go to Call Lowe on debut, who stood up to the plate and did a great job, and all the lads with head cuts who refused to go off and let their mates down. The main casualty of the day was the turbonater who was made to go off by the ref for not being able to control the flow of blood from his head despite being a qualified first aider. He was eventually treated by a nice chap from Colne, who wasn’t a first aider but professed to have watched every episode of casualty.
M-O-M went to Cooper for a great display in the centres, and D-O-D went to Grayson, because I get to choose it....

Wigan 4th XV 10 Aspull 2nd XV 3

'Sniffer' writes....
On one of the worst days of the year so far Wigan Vets welcomed Aspull to D.V. Wigan did try to play some football but it was impossible and a win was ground out with sheer determination and strength of character.
A great try in the first half from Chris Caw and a couple of Grayson penalties were the only scores but it proved enough. Superb defence in the second half by all the team kept Aspull at bay and made the considerable crowd wonder what had happened to the Aspull players who have been running all the tries in lately. (Check 1st team report).
Wigan could have posted more points if the kids had not swapped the ball for a bag of cement when Grayson was taking his kick under the posts, or given Redleg Vaseline to keep his hands warm. Despite this being a local derby and a top of the table clash, the game was played in great spirit and was superbly controlled by the referee.
This result now means that the Vets have won the league and look forward to the cup final in May. The Ellaandandy Developments sponsored M-O-M went to Syd Grayson for a superb all action display at full back, (who needs to get that £20 to Lewis) and The D-O-D was awarded to Holland for his rant before the game.
The Wigan team enjoyed the sponsor’s hospitality long into the night and had a great sing along with the guitar, only being spoiled by Joey’s awful rendition of Oasis. Wigan now look forward to next week and hopefully another great drink with their mates from Carnforth. .
HOW THE OPPOSITION SAW IT - Fom the Aspull website
This game had the fascinating dual interests of a highly anticipated local derby and first versus second in the league. Wigan looked to win this game to secure the league leaders trophy and Aspull likewise needed a win to attain promotion.
Lots of good natured ribbing and joking had taken place in the weeks and months leading up to this game and some light-hearted banter had been misconstrued as open warfare in some quarters. However, the kindly gentlemen of Wigan RUFC hosted this game and it was played in good spirit and conduct by both teams. A true reflection of the genuine affection both teams have for each other. (Christmas do, here I come?).
The game was made more interesting as Wigan had a few players harshly suspended and Aspull lost three players, kicking and screaming, to first team duty.
A poor decision by captain Alex Thompson to play the first half against the appalling wind and rain back-fired when the half time turnaround was greeted by virtually windless conditions. Even the sun came out to play. By this time, the damage had been done.
Wigan started the game like a house on fire and Aspull could not repel the relentless pressure of the first few minutes and conceded an early converted try – the only one of the game. After this, even against the wind, Aspull began to look the better team. Only poor passing and handling, possibly due to the poor playing conditions prevented Aspull from converting their superior possession into points. A further penalty by Wigan pushed the score to 10 – Nil and this remained the score until half time.
Aspull looked even better in the second half with possession and territory mostly in Aspull’s favour but superb tackling and defending by Wigan kept them away from the line. David Charles Ashcroft came closest to scoring for Aspull but lost the ball over the line. A good penalty was struck by Stephen Fillingham and brought the score to a tantalising 10 points to 3 with some twenty minutes left to play.
However, sterling performances by the whole team and Ashcroft, Andy Stott and Alex Thompson in particular could not inspire Aspull to any further scores and 10 points to three was the final result in Wigan’s favour.
Our congratulations to Wigan but we hope to be joining them at the league presentation evening as proud owners of the second promotion place.

Wigan 4th XV 50 Carnforth 2nd XV 26
Saturday April 5th 2008

Wigan Vets welcomed their great friends Carnforth to the Valley, for a good game of rugby and an even better drink. Carnforth as usual hired a bus for the day and enjoyed a superb day out even though the result was in Wigan’s favour, staying well into the night to enjoy the Wigan hospitality.
The game itself was a great spectacle for the sizeable crowd to enjoy, and was played in great spirit. The Vets played their usual brand of open rugby and scored some fine tries including a length of the field effort finished off by super-sub Steve Mercer.
The first try of the game seemed to set the platform when the ageing Ian Boardam outpaced the Carnforth cover to dive in at the corner. After seeing this Sydney Grayson decided it was his turn to express himself. After fielding a kick with his toe he set off at snails pace towards the opposition, beating man after man on his way before sending out a pass to the winger, who with no support was bungled into touch. At oranges coach Hoochie realised that Wallace had far too much energy and asked him to run touch instead.
It was more of the same for Wigan in the second half with great displays from Cooper and Melling in the centres and excellent work from all the forwards M-O-M went to Ste Mercer for a top class game and D-O-D was awarded to Sharkie who was caught by Mac’s paperboy after being twenty yards clear.

Wigan travelled up the M6 for their penultimate game of the season determined not to relinquish a proud 100% playing record. Thornton seemed to have other ideas and tried every trick in the book to deny the side.
After a shaky start Wigan settled into their normal game and began to throw the ball about, creating some space for the speedy backs to exploit. Against a driving wind Wigan were running every play, even on their own line. And strong running from winger Redrow was gaining them valuable yards. The highlight of the first half was a tremendous fifty yard try from skipper McHugh who turned the Thornton defence inside out before sprinting to the line. Unfortunately he was injured in the act of scoring and missed several kicks because of this, only realising after playing the full game that he needed twenty four stitches in a deep cut.
