Wigan 3rd XV 61 Birchfield 2nd XV 26
Saturday September 8th 2007
Report: Dave Paton
Wigan opened their campaign with an emphatic win over the team from Widnes; however, the score does not do justice to the determination of Birchfield and the fact that, at times, the teams were evenly matched.
With no referee available, Gill Allen, our Ladies Charperson kindly offered to referee. She did a sterling job to keep the game flowing and I cannot thank here enough for her efforts!
Birchfield scored first through a cheeky, but well calculated chip over the Wigan defensive line. The team from Widnes were a combination of older heads and quick, pacey backs. The teams exchanged scores early on through tries from Wayne Bullough and Greg Evans to leave the sides quite evenly matched by the end of the 1st half.
The second half saw further exchanges, but Wigan's domination of the breakdown lead to flambouyent scores from Matt Cooper, making an impressive debut and Steve O'Brien . Daylight was put between the sides by a second Cooper try and the jinking wizardry of Dave Paton (much to Jamesy's amusement!!)
A great effort all round by the Douglas Valley 3's. Many thanks must again go to Richard and the Birchfield 2's. I know that we will be in for another tough match when we head over to Chemic Ville later this season!

Wigan 3rd XV 13 St Mary's OB 17
Saturday September 15th 2007
Report: Dave Paton
Another gutsy performance from the 3rd XV saw them narrowly lose to a St Mary's side who were intent on forward domination. A young Wigan Pack competed well, but conceded an early try through some clever SMOB forward play.
Wigan then stepped up a gear and persistent waves of attack saw Mike Robinson 'score' in the corner (good job there was no TMO, eh Robby?). Great hands again saw a second Wigan attack beautifully finished off by the backs - 10-5 to Wigan.
However, it was not the end of SMOB and a bullocking run from their number 12 (and M.O.M) saw the scores draw level, with a further pushover try and conversion making the half time score 10-17.
A Snelgrove penalty was the difference between thew two sides in the second half as Wigan's continual attack could not produce the goods. playing with a man less due to injury, Wigan also defended valiantly and kept the final score Wigan 13 - SMOB 17

Report: Mike Robinson

This was one game that the Wigan 3rd wanted to be on top form to beat one of the old foes, unfortunately it wasn’t quite the performance or the result that they strived for.
With a strong looking pack and some quick backs Aspull had the better of the early play but Wigan held them out and where able to gain periods of sustained possession in the Aspull half, this playing against the infamous 2nd team pitch slope.  Wigan weren’t able to make this possession tell and a swift Aspull attack saw them score close to the posts for an easy conversion to take them 7 points clear.  Wigan rallied after some stern words from Messrs Paton, Simm and Cameron under the posts and after a sustained attack involving several phases on good ball retention saw young Matt Cooper beat three defenders to score an excellent try that was converted by Greg Evans.
Wigan continued to keep up good pressure in the Aspull half but on too many occasions ball was turned over to easily to Aspull who made good use of the ball to score a further 2 tries and one conversion to make the half time score 19 – 7 to Aspull.
In the second period neither team played with any continuity and Wigan didn’t make the most of playing down the slope.  Aspull had the better of the play throughout the half and where able to cross the Wigan line one more time for a converted try.  Although Wigan battled hard with good performances from a number of players they weren’t able to contend with Aspull in the tight or the loose.
The final score reflected the game with Aspull running out 26 – 7 winners.

Ormskirk 3rd XV 35 Wigan 3rd XV 0
Saturday October 20th 2007

Report: Dave Paton

Never has a scoreline been so unrepresentative of a match than this one. Wigan's young side, led by debutant captain Stegga Jones, came up against a usual Green Lane mix of size, power and forward thinking determination. Yet the Douglas Valley boys never gave up, with a solid defensive performance.
Early pressure from Ormskirk saw a try wide out on  the right hand side and the score remained one try for much of the 1st half. Wigan began to dominate the set pieces with great front row performances from Woods, Stopforth C and Jeffers. Debutants Matt Graham and Mark Howarth worked tirelessly in the pack and made excellent contributions all day.
Matt Cooper and Matt McQuillan produced some dynamic runs into the 'Kirk half, assisted by Killian Wallace, debuting at scrum-half. His quick ball set up some great opportunities, but unfortunately support play was lacking and Ormskirk turned over ball regularly. The turning point came when Greg 'Tree Surgeon' Evans limped off the field with an ankle injury (which was soon tended to by his own nurses 'Lambert and Butler').
This meant a reshuffle in the back line which saw the impressive Pat Gallagher move to 10. Playing even with illness, Pat used clever kicks and chips to break a strong O's defence and in fact thought he had scored; unfortunately for Pat, the dotted line was actually the 5m line and not the try line!! O, as they always do, played very cleverly, penetrating out wide to score their remaining tries. The majority of scores were from counter attack and meant that they had to work especially hard in attack.
Missing many regular players, Wigan stuck resolutely to the task and never gave up. Led admirably by The Steg, Wigan can take pride in this performance.

Report: Dave Paton
The scurge of the 3rd XV, late cry-offs, struck with 19 normal faces being unavailable for this trip to Chester. This said, the 12 players did not lack commitment at any stage and made the well organised Christleton 1st XV work hard for their win.
Being 3 players short added an initial hindrance, but generously Christleton learnt two players of their own, who were determined throughout. Christleton's tries came from stretching a dogged Wigan defence and by having superior numbers. Debuts for Wigan included Harrison and Tyler, with Hurst making only his second appearance for the club. Big efforts from the whole pack, especially to Ian Boardman who came to help us out at the 11th hour and Paul Berry, who debuted in the back row!
Wigan's try came from a blindside move, with yours truly putting Matt McQuillan through to race 25 metres under the posts.
A good effort, but one which needs to be improved upon before the visit of Leigh next week.

Wigan 3rd XV 31 Widnes 3rd XV 19
Saturday November 24th 2007
Report: David Phillips
Wigan 3rds again ground out another victory for their last home game before the Christmas break taking them to the giddy heights of 7th in Division 5 West.
Wigan started the brightest with some good forward play coming off the line outs and the early scrums.
Chris Simm was a thorn in the side of the Widnes line out during the first half and from a cheeky steal and some fast ball across the hands of Matt Cooper and Andy Lewis, Jean Baptiste became the first Frenchman to score in Wigan colours with a well taken try.
Widnes looked ripe for the taking however from the early lead, the Wigan forwards lost much composure and continued to be turned over on too many occasions. Widnes replied from a lost Wigan ruck and equalled the score to 5-5.
The 3rds picked themselves up as the game developed into a forward battle with little or no ball coming to either sets of backs. From a maul inside the Wigan half, the Widnes full back put through their stand off and although the ball and player looked to be in touch, the try was given and duly converted. At half time Widnes were leading 12-5.
Wigan made some changes with Chris Simm moved to the back row with Chris Caw taking his place at lock. From the kick off Wigan scored from a lovely move by Jon Blan who caught the ball deep in his own half and ran through to the back line. He popped it to Matt Cooper who passed it to Andy Lewis who by this stage had so much momentum he could not be stopped and placed the ball under the posts. Greg Evans duly converted and Wigan were now level with the visitors. Immediately Wigan fell asleep from the kick off and Widnes took an easy try to take the lead to 19 points, however this was far as they went. Chris Lyon, Chris Lowton and Matt McQillan took their places on the field as Widnes started to tire. Jamie Redfern scored an excellent try in the right corner but the angle was too much for Greg Evans however crucially Wigan had the lead and defended it during a ten minute period when Widnes through all they had at the opposition.
From a scrum on the Wigan 22, unlikely scrum half Gav Hirst popped the ball to Chris Lyon who tore up the park to score under the posts. This was a superb move but the referee decided to bring the ball back for a penalty 5 metres from the line. Swift thinking from Craig Stopforth led to him tapping and crashing over the line unopposed. The last try was arguably the best. With 5 minutes remaining, Matt McQillan picked the ball up on the Wigan 22 and ripped past a fatigued Widnes defence, he took the ball to the Widnes 22 and was unfairly clattered to the ground. However Lyon was on his shoulder and scored an easy try to wrap it up for the home team.
Individual flair won this game for the 3rds. Wigan dominated the possession but gave it up too easily when they went into contact situations. In the words of Captain Simmy "too many scrum halves, spoil the pudding". LSH away next week will not be as forgiving so some basic drills at training this week will be the order of the day.

LSH 4th XV 20 Wigan 3rd XV 5
Saturday December 1st 2007
Report: David Paton
Some things never change; Wigan 3's manage to put in an excellent performance and LSH's pitches still remain the worst in any league!   This was a game that could have swung either way. In the end, the slicker handling of the LSH backs was the difference between the two sides. Early exchanges saw Wigan's pack dominate the breakdown and gained territorial advantage. However, this wasn't turned into points as an mistake out wide led to LSH scoring their first try, which was converted.

Again, pressure from Wigan's forwards gained field possession, with Ged Pidd, Stegga Jones and Jaffa Jeffries all making good yards. A stretched defence led to LSH scoring out wide again to leave the score 12-0 at half time.   The second half started brightly for The Black and Whites, with good possession and some bullocking runs from Howarth and Waite, who both made impressive debuts in the front row. Quick ball enabled Hurst, playing at 10 for only the second time, to put a great cross field kick into the small in goal and for Matt Cooper to collect - 12-5.
The remainder of the half saw some feisty attack and defence from both sides; either of whom could have scored. LSH were awarded a penalty close to the sticks with 15 minutes to go and they elected to kick at goal. This illustrated the dogged defence of the Wigan team. 15 - 5   As the game reached it's climax, a move out wide from the experienced LSH backs led to their third and final try - 20-5.
A great performance by all in Black and White, with a special mention to Jean Baptiste for his 'weaving' through the LSH defence. This is the side and performance we will need when we face Leigh on 15th December. Just one final note, during a time when referees are often criticised, I would like to say thank you to our referee for the day who was spot on with all decisions and made the game enjoyable to play - thank you, sir!!
Leigh 6th XV 27 Wigan 3rd XV 10
Saturday December 15th 2007

Report: Dave Paton
A great match which fully justified its derby status. From the kick off,
a hard contest ensued.
Early wigan pressure led to 2 missed penalty attempts. From the second
attempt, Leigh's counter attack led to a try against the run of play.
Sustained wigan forward dominance at the set piece wasn't converted into
points. Again, from the counter attack, leigh scored making it 10-0.

Wigan's points began when quick ball from a ruck, into the devaistating
hands of Jaffa Jeffries, whose pass found Jon Blan in the corner for 10-5.
Further missed penalty attempts cost Wigan dear.
The second half began badly for Wigan with Leigh scoring 2 quick tries
and putting daylight between the sides.

The try of the match came, again through forward dominance by wigan,
quick hands found returning flyer Graham Waters who crashed over in the
corner. Unlike Mark Cueto, Muddy's dodgy try was given!!

A great game, played with spirit by both sides!
