Wigan's U17 squad sported their new shirts for the game with Waterloo at Douglas Valley on Sunday February 17th. The sponsors are Messrs Firestone Building Products of Winsford in Cheshire, manufacturers of single ply
roofing systems: EPDM RubberCover, EPDM RubberGard and UltraPly TPO, and Lining Systems: EPDM Pond Liner, and we were delighted to welcome Alex Sweeney from Firestone to the club on Sunday to accept a souvenir shirt from the Colts management team. Alex, whose son Oliver is a member of the Colts' squad, also featured in the team picture, and told us he was sorely tempted to turn out again after handling a ball....more information can be found about Firestone on the company's website - click here for more information.

Collegiate too strong in Cup
Liverpool Collegiate 20 Wigan 7
Sunday February 3rd 08
Played in poor conditions, Wigan's young guns could not raise their game enough to beat league leaders Liverpool Collegiatel in this cup tie. It was always going to be a tall order and for twenty minutes the lads held their own, unforced handling errors and turn over ball eventually being their downfall.
The Colts have two remaining league games left and are entered in the Halbro League Cups draw later this month

Three wins out of three...
Wigans Colts have certainly turned a corner having won their last three matches, Wigan 11 Blackburn 10, Wigan 13 Oldham 5 and a tremendous away win at Rochdale, 10 - 20.
The team is going from strength to strength with new players joining every week, the squad now has 25 players including 5 recent recruits. The Manager and coaching staff are looking forward to the second half of the season, which includes The Lancashire Cup, The Halbro League Cup, The RFU National Cup and five remaining league games. The New Year starts at home this Sunday against arch local rivals Aspull, who narrowly beat us at the start of the season 17 - 10.
Support from all Club members would be appreciated, Kick Off 12.30pm. For everyone's info the League Tables can be found by clicking on links on our web site then Colts League. Quote from Tracey Grundy: 'The lads are playing good, hard running rugby and we all beleive the team can achieve its potential in this second half of the season and who knows a pot isn't beyond us....' |

Colts go through to next round of the cup
Even though the Colts lost narrowly 8 - 7 to Manchester on Sunday November 25th in the first round of the Lancashire U17 Cup, the side has gone through to the next round with one of the four best losing performances. Wigan will play Liverpool Collegiate away before 1 Feb 2008.

Wigan lose by a point but performance sees them through
Manchester Junior Colts 8 Wigan Junior Colts 7
Report: Sam Heeley
On a tight gluepot of a pitch and with the wind in their faces, Wigan held their own in an opening phase where both sides struggled to gain superiority. Some good breaks by Wigan foundered on spilled ball due to the conditions. Pressure by Wigan produced two kickable penalties, which Heeley and Atherton contrived to miss. Pressure from Manchester ended with a penalty under the Wigan sticks, which was duly converted, and in the closing seconds Wigan manfully kept Manchester out but from the ensuing 5 metre scrum, the ball was fortuitously kicked out of the scrum, over the Wigan line where it was pounced on by Manchester, with the Wigan defence helpless.
In the second half Wigan used the conditions to take up residence in the Manchester half with a combination of high kicks, forward drives and strong running in the centres. To their credit Manchester held firm, helped by a third narrowly missed penalty and a wrong penalty option under the sticks which let 3 points go begging. With 10 minutes to good handling by the Wigan backs gave debutant Atherton the chance to use his power and pace to burst through and score a deserved Wigan try which was well converted by Heeley.
Despite every Wigan effort, Manchester doggedly kept them at bay until the final whistle of a keenly fought and spirited contest. Jeffrey was confident at the back, Atherton and Clough solid in defence and penetrating with ball in hand, Halsall worked tirelessly and Austin the pick of an excellent pack performance.
Disappointment at the result was felt keenly by all, particularly the coach (who went on walkabout to get over it!!), however the performance has been rewarded as Wigan have progressed to the second round as one of the four closest losers, to play Liverpool Collegiate away (tba).

ANOTHER ENCOURAGING PERFORMANCE AT OLDHAM
Oldham 24 Wigan 13
Report: Sam Heeley
Wigan travelled to Oldham expecting a tough contest, given Oldham's 41-7 victory over Aspull, but shocked the home side by taking an early lead. A well placed kick by Davies put Oldham under pressure and earned Wigan 2 kickable penalties, which they spurned to drive at the line culminating in debutant Foster forcing his way over from close range.
A scrappy period of play ensued with neither side applying concerted pressure, with Wigan showing a more adventurous approach, typified by Boardman's searing break which unfortunately outpaced his support. Oldham however gained an element of supriority and equalised to take the teams in all square at half time.
Oldham's tactics in the second half was to use their forward superiority, kicking to the corners and keeping the game tight. This gained them an early try and a 10-5 lead.
Wigan endeavoured to run the ball at every opportunity and launched a number of attacks from their own 22 but were unable to breach the Oldham cover and a series of penalties allowed the Oldham lineout to drive for the line which they ultimately crossed and converted the try.
Oldham seemed confident that they had broken Wigan, but Jeffrey, a chip off the old block, jinked his way through from outside the 22 for a fine individual try, leaving Wigan a converted score in arrears.
Heeley spotted a minute gap in the Oldham defence to take the ball from his own 22 and outpace the cover to be stopped by the full full back some 20 metres out, offloaded to Boardman who drew the penalty which Wigan strangely, given their earlier cavalier approach, decided to kick at goal. Davies duly converted the three points.
Again Oldham profited from Wigan's infringements to force lineouts deep in the Wigan half from which they eventually forced their way over for a converted try.
Strong performances from Austin, Heaton and Winstanley ensured Wigan competed and never allowed Oldham to feel comfortable.
Wigan showed immense commitment again in this game, as previously and once they have mastered the technicalities of Union will surely be a force to be reckoned with.

WIGAN ENCOURAGED BY OPENING PERFORMANCE
Wigan 3 Aspatria 17
Lancashire Colts U17 League B
Sunday September 2nd 07
The score line flatters our opposition from Cumbria and certainly does not reflect the effort put in by our outstanding young players making their first foray into the dark world of rucks, mauls, lineouts and the like.
To quote Chairman Frank Morgan, "It was Bath v Wigan Rugby League all over again"
The facts speak for themselves: Wigan were three nil up after 10 minutes following tremendous pressure which saw the visitors concede three penalties on their own line during the opening period, unfortunately only one was slotted over. The visitors then began to settle and it was now their turn to place Wigan's young guns under the cosh.
It was two defensive 5 yard scrummages that led to Wigan's downfall, both kicks being charged down in goal, with the Aspatria No7 getting to the loose ball first to steal a brace of tries. Half time score 3 - 12.
The second half was all about defence and both sides tackled like demons: just one error led to Aspatrias 3rd try which saw their right winger crash over in the corner. Wigan rallied and went close to scoring themselves once from a penalty move at close range, and once when the ball was quickly moved down the backs the final pass being adjudged to be forward by the referee.
Coach Tracey Grundy said: "The result was disappointing, the performance was tremendous from all our players who gave 100%, we will learn from our mistakes and I can't wait to play Aspull next Sunday..."
